The man who stole the gold, "Nopperabo," hid it in a certain location just before being captured, and tattooed its location on the bodies of 24 prisoners, helping them escape. It is said that the tattoos of all 24 prisoners form a single code. One day, Sugimoto is attacked by a wild brown bear, but an Ainu girl saves him. The girl, named "Asirpa," has her father killed by the man who stole the gold. Sugimoto, in pursuit of the gold, and Asirpa, who wants to avenge her father, end up working together. Also eyeing the gold is Lieutenant Tsurumi Atsushirou of the Imperial Japanese Army's 7th Division. For the sake of the division members who risked their lives in the Russo-Japanese War but were not rewarded, Lieutenant Tsurumi is plotting to conquer Hokkaido and needs the gold as military funds. Another escapee is Hijikata Toshizo, the Shinsengumi's "Demon Vice-Commander," who was thought to have died in the Boshin War.
