Could that be a panic disorder?" Have you ever felt short of breath on the train, your breathing became shallow, or felt like you were going to stop breathing? Your heart started racing, something was wrong, you wondered if it was depression, what was it, or if it was a physical illness. Even if you talk to someone about it, they'll just say it's just your imagination, or you should just wait and see how it goes? People often say that, but this is called a panic disorder. Or it's called autonomic nervous system disorder or autonomic nervous system attack. That's the kind of illness it is. If you go to the hospital and get treatment, you'll get better, so I hope you don't worry and go to the hospital. It's not a special illness, but a common illness, so if you go, you'll get better quickly. It's an illness that heals relatively smoothly, so please don't worry. ■Mechanism What is the mechanism behind this? Is it panic? What is panic? What is autonomic nervous system disorder? You might be thinking that way, but let's start from the beginning. The autonomic nervous system is a system that balances the human body. There are many different kinds of balance. Relax, get excited, relax, get sleepy, get angry, get sad. There are mechanisms to balance all of these things. The system that makes you excited, sad, and active is called the sympathetic nervous system. Relaxation, sleepiness, and a sense of ease are what the parasympathetic nervous system is all about. Humans are a state of attraction between these two forces. This whole situation of attraction is called the autonomic nervous system, and the sympathetic nervous system is what makes you excited, tense, anxious, and active, while the parasympathetic nervous system is the opposite, making you want to relax, feel sleepy, and feel drowsy. When you exercise, the sympathetic nervous system is dominant, and when you want to relax after a meal, the parasympathetic nervous system is dominant, and that's about it. When the sympathetic nervous system is dominant in a good way, you can concentrate and you're in a good state. However, if this goes too far, your heart will beat too fast, you'll start beating rapidly, your heart will pound, you'll have palpitations, and your breathing will become shallow and you'll hyperventilate. This is called an autonomic nervous system attack, or a panic attack. Conversely, when it's in a good state, you'll feel relaxed and eased, but if it goes too far, you'll feel sleepy. So when you're stressed, you're more likely to go in this direction.
