A four-day workweek, working from home, or even better working conditions, like access to gyms. What sounded unimaginable a few decades ago is now standard practice at some companies. The reason: Generation Z, who envision working life somewhat differently. But many from the older generation wonder whether young people can even make these demands, or whether they've simply become weary of work. For journalist Ronja Ebeling, it's by no means the case that the younger generation has become weary of work. Rather, it's that in the current climate, young people are more concerned that work is no longer the center of their lives. Other things, such as family, are increasingly taking center stage, giving life meaning. Particularly influenced by the experiences of their own parents, who sometimes lived only for their work and rarely saw their families, the new generation of young workers wants to avoid precisely these kinds of experiences. Another factor, as entrepreneur Laura Bornmann explains, is the changing recruitment landscape in the job market. In times of skilled labor shortages, the tables are turned, and employers have to compete for qualified job seekers. SPD party chairwoman Saskia Esken agrees: "It's not just about earning money to pay the rent," which is why employers now have to use many other means to attract young workers.
