However, she also criticized the status quo: "That over 30 percent of those arriving in the European Union are currently coming to Germany. That's Schengen, which isn't working, and Dublin, which isn't working." To solve the problem, she argued, it's essential to ensure a fair distribution and safe passage. Refugees must be intercepted in the Mediterranean so they can be distributed to the EU's external borders. There, in humanitarian camps, their eligibility for asylum must be systematically assessed. Those deemed ineligible should be returned immediately. This measure would alleviate the burden. In particular, migration agreements should be discussed with the countries of origin of the refugees. Because it's not that Germany doesn't need immigration; on the contrary. Skilled workers are especially needed, which is why she advocates: "We say we need immigration; we want to create legal pathways for people who possess the qualifications we require."
