People and Places of North Mayo Series: Céide Fields Visitor Centre, Glenurla, Ballycastle
In this episode of our ‘People and Places of North Mayo’ video series, we hear the fascinating story of the remarkable Céide Fields and we meet with the wonderful Gretta Byrne – Archaeologist and Manager of the award winning, newly renovated Céide Fields Visitor Centre. Nestled between Belderrig and Ballycastle this amazing site contains the oldest known stone-walled fields in the world – dating back an incredible 6,000 years. It is one of the most historically significant sites on the planet and indeed has a very big part to play in the future as Gretta explains. The enhanced and immersive visitor centre is set against some of the most dramatic rock formations in Ireland. A viewing platform on the edge of the 110-metre-high cliff will help you make the most of the breath-taking scenery. The Céide Fields is without a doubt a must visit experience along the North Mayo Wild Atlantic Way route. Please remember that on the first Wednesday of each month, the Céide Fields OPW Heritage Site offer free admission to individual visitors and families! Also, always remember to come prepared with protective clothing and sturdy footwear. The terrain and the weather can be challenging at times. Visit: https://heritageireland.ie/places-to-...
