ALL THE MODS - EP 7 - 1977 Yamaha YZ 250D

Number 7 in my ALL THE MODS series features another 2-stroke. This time it's a classic 1977 Yamaha YZ 250D motocross beast. This model of YZ 250D is identical to the one ridden by Bob 'Hurricane' Hannah when he won his first US National Supercross Championship in 1977. Even with the carb on my YZ 250D a bit boggy on hard acceleration, this moto will rip your arms off if you don't know what to expect from a 2-stroke. The mods to this machine are fairly minimal. This YZ 250D was a rescue from a shed and it had been used as a trail bike and had mud caked and dried in every possible location. It was a mess. Once cleaned, we cleaned and tuned the carb, checked engine compression, put on new tires, restored the original bodywork, and had a couple of hard points re-welded so the gas tank didn't fall off. Otherwise, this YZ 250D is about 90 percent original survivor. It is a blast to ride and a reminder of how crazy powerful 2-strokes are.
