VIDA DE PUEBLO // En Tren por el Interior de Rumanía

The train in Romania not only connects cities; it connects layers of time. Traveling on rails through this country is like entering into contact with an intimate geography, with towns that don't appear in tourist brochures but that, from the window, appear like living postcards, motionless in their resistance to oblivion. Sometimes a curve in the road reveals a church with pointed towers, a cemetery leaning on a hill, a stationary tractor under a willow tree. The stations—small, quiet, with iron benches painted in muted colors—are capsules where the deep country breathes. Those rural platforms, with names that sound like ballads, like Ciumești, Tiream, Căuaș, Acâș, parade like chapters in a choral novel. And among all these places invisible to the international tourist radar, there is one that stands out for its delicate uniqueness: Carei, in the far northwest of the country, very close to the Hungarian border. Arriving there by train is a gesture of patience and curiosity, but the reward is discovering a place where languages, memories, and silences mingle. Carei is not a city to be shown off. Rather, it lets itself be sensed. From the station, upon arriving, the first thing you notice is serenity: leafy trees, quiet streets, people walking slowly. There are no crowds, no rush, no flashy offers. But as you delve deeper into its streets, what emerges is a dense history, sometimes contradictory, but ever-present. For centuries, Carei was part of the Austro-Hungarian imperial mosaic, and it still seems that way. The neoclassical facades, the bilingual plaques in Romanian and Hungarian, and the rhythm of daily life are reminiscent of a European center that was dissolved by history, but not by memory. Here, two languages are spoken in hushed tones, two cultures are celebrated, religions and traditions intersect. Coexistence is tangible, not as discourse, but as daily practice: at the bakery, at school, at the market. The symbolic heart of the town is Károlyi Castle, an architectural gem that seems to have sprung from a fairy tale. Surrounded by a centuries-old park and deer that can be seen at dusk, the castle is not an empty relic, but a living space hosting concerts, exhibitions, fairs, and school events. Its sensitively restored interior blends stained-glass windows, antique furniture, and a narrative that respects the wounds of time. But Carei is also told in the details: in the red roofs that stretch across the fields, in the cafés with a Central European flavor, in the bicycles leaning fearlessly against the railings. Carei is a town that has not been invaded by tourism, and perhaps that's why its beauty is all the more genuine. You don't find it: you receive it if you know how to look. The train then continues toward Satu Mare, or disappears into the plain, but something of Carei remains in the memory. As if one had touched a different Romania, a border not only geographically but symbolically. A Romania that isn't shouted or sold, but suggested. A Romania that lives on the margins of guidebooks, but at the center of its own history. The villages the train passes through—those not on any "top 10 must-see" list—are precisely those that build the soul of the trip. Seeing a woman watering her hollyhocks, a shepherd crossing the tracks, a child waving from a bicycle, is as revealing as any cathedral. And in the slow murmur of those cars moving north, Romania reveals itself not as a spectacle, but as truth. #openyourwindowtotheworld #TravelIsHypersurvival 🌎 Subtitles in Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Russian, and English.
