How China Built the World's Longest Glass Bridge in a Canyon No Machine Could Reach (Full Process)
99 panes of glass. 300 meters of open air beneath your feet. This is the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge — and it shouldn't exist. At 430 meters long with a deck just 60 centimeters deep, this bridge holds 800 people above a canyon floor that sits 300 meters below. It was built in a karst gorge so remote that no heavy machine could reach the site — every bolt, every rod of rebar, every cubic meter of concrete was carried or mixed by hand. The engineering problems were extraordinary. Ancient fractured rock riddled with faults and sinkholes beneath the anchor points. Winds screaming through the gorge at over 200 km/h. A bridge deck so slender — a span-to-depth ratio of 625 — that it had never been built at this scale anywhere in China. Architect Haim Dotan designed a structure that would disappear into the landscape. The towers were clad in native rock and vegetation so they look like natural canyon spires. The cables were curved into a V-geometry, creating a deck that widens at each end and narrows at the centre like butterfly wings. And the floor — 99 triple-laminated glass panels, each weighing 1.5 tonnes — was tested to withstand bulldozers before a single visitor stepped on. Six months of wind tunnel testing at Hunan University. Fifty glass counterweight spheres embedded in the structure to kill resonance. Water reservoirs hanging beneath the beams as damping mass. A team of engineers whose average age was 28. The bridge opened on August 20, 2016. Daily visitors are capped at 8,000. The first week, it had to close — not because anything broke, but because China couldn't get tickets to people fast enough.
