In the town of Alba de Tormes (Salamanca) stands the Basilica of the Annunciation, where the empty reliquary and tomb of Saint Teresa of Ávila can now be visited. Why are they empty? Because on August 28, 2024, the saint's tomb, which had remained closed for the past 110 years, was opened for a "canonical examination of her body" and her relics. Miguel Ángel González, prior of the Discalced Carmelites of Alba de Tormes, explained on the radio program 'Mediodía COPE' the reason for opening the marble tomb: "Now the saint's body, which was kept in a silver reliquary, is being studied so that her facial features can be reconstructed."
