At first, some Indonesians welcomed the Japanese as liberators who promised to end Dutch colonial rule under the slogan “Asia for Asians.” But this optimism quickly faded. Japan’s primary goal was to extract resources for its war effort, leading to widespread shortages of food and basic goods. Millions of Indonesians were forced into labor as romusha, building roads, railways, and military infrastructure under terrible conditions—many never returned. Daily life became a struggle for survival, with strict controls, propaganda, and harsh punishments. At the same time, the Japanese mobilized and trained Indonesians, both politically and militarily. This experience would later play a crucial role in the fight for independence, as it gave Indonesians the organization, skills, and confidence to resist colonial rule.
