Route based on the LPGC Explora app that runs through the Natural Monument of Bandama, formed by the Peak and the Caldera, within the protected landscape of Tafira. We start at the Mirador del Pico de Bandama, although the route allows you to change the order as you wish. The panoramic views from this volcanic cone are breathtaking. The peak is the product of an explosive activity whose 2.5 km long basaltic flow filled the Los Hoyos ravine. We go down the access road to the peak until we reach a signposted bend to the left where we access the Camino Borde de Caldera (Caldera Rim Trail) that surrounds the crater. The mixture of volcanic eruptions and the presence of underground water favoured the emptying and subsequent collapse of the cone, giving rise to the Caldera. After walking around the perimeter for about 3 kilometres, we reach the way down (caution, closes at 17:00). On the north wall of the caldera is the archaeological site "Cueva de los Canarios", a group of caves used as a food store. It is not advisable to visit due to several landslides. We return to the path to contemplate the Caldera from the Mirador del Cornical viewpoint. Since July 2021 the downhill path has been called "Camino Agustinito", in homage to Agustín Hernández Torres, who walked it every day for more than 80 years to look after his crops at the bottom of the Caldera. The name Bandama comes from Daniel Van Damme, a Flemish merchant from the 16th century, who bought the land occupied by the caldera to use it for vine cultivation. It was he who built the farmhouse at the bottom of the caldera, as well as being a pioneer in the cultivation of vines in areas covered by pyroclasts. From the Casas del Fondo we start a circular path that goes around the nooks and crannies of the Caldera, under the imposing vertical walls, thus ending our route.
