The occurrence and finding of one fetus in utero is called Singleton pregnancy while the finding of more than one at any given time is called MULTIPLE PREGNANCY. Multiple pregnancy takes various forms in relation to the number of fetuses the woman is carrying and is referred as such, with the commonest form being TWIN PREGNANCY [2 Fetuses]. A number of factors puts a woman at risk of having Multiple pregnancy such as Assisted reproductive technologies - induction of ovulation, use of certain drugs, race, familial tendencies etc. The growing fetuses may or may not share the membranes depending on what stage separation happens and can be a result of one or more than one fertilised egg. Those from one fertilised egg tend to be of the same sex and identical hence referred to as IDENTICAL, while those from more than one egg are often of different sexes although they can also be of the same sex and are rather not identical hence called FRATERNAL.
