Juan José Mateos San José (Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, 1972) is a retired Civil Guard officer, writer, and popularizer specializing in the history of the Civil Guard and the fight against ETA terrorism. He joined the Corps in 1995 and spent his career in units such as Public Safety, the Rapid Action Group (GAR), Traffic, and the Judicial Police, where he worked on organized crime and forensic investigations. Just days after beginning his service, he was the victim of an ETA attack, which left him with permanent injuries. After retiring from active duty, he has focused his work on preserving the memory of terrorism victims and disseminating information about the work of the Civil Guard's elite units through lectures and publications. He is the author of works such as *Pikoletos: The Defeat of ETA and the Elite of the Civil Guard*, *Innocents: The Other Victims of ETA*, *Strait: The Wild Frontier of Spanish Drug Trafficking*, and *UCO: The Unknown History*, dedicated to the history of the Central Operational Unit.
