On July 13, 1950, Kokkinaki took the new aircraft into the air. Fifteen minutes later, he had to land because the heat exchangers were overheating. The problem was solved by wrapping the pipes in asbestos. It then continued in service for twenty-five years. The Il-14 was the last Soviet passenger aircraft with piston engines—and one of the most reliable. It flew on one engine when the second failed. It landed on ice, dirt, and snow-covered runways. It provided support for drifting stations in the Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Soviet government delegations used it to fly visits to India, Burma, and Afghanistan. 1,348 aircraft were built. Czechoslovakia and East Germany purchased licenses. Some examples are still flown by enthusiasts.
