Replacing a concrete windowsill
Since I moved into my house several years ago I have wanted to replace this window sill as it was cracked, when I had the pebble dash removed from the walls in 2021 the windowsill also moved forward causing me more concern, I have been putting this job off as I know I will have to remove a lot of material creating a large hole in the wall, and you never know what problems you will find in the future. As the weather was looking good and I had no other excuses I decided to just go for it and started removing the old windowsill, I was concerned the windowsill would be too strong to break as it was concrete but as I removed it I found there was a concrete 'cap' over brick. I continued to remove any lose material until I got down to something solid, I then made sure to clear as much dust as I could by hovering the hole. With the area cleared and prepped I could start building back up, I fixed the previously removed stones back into place using a mortar mix lining them up using a form that I had made from scrap wood, once the mortar has set slightly I removed the form and used a paintbrush to tidy up the pointing around the stones. Once the mortar had had firmed up enough I back filled the cavity with stone chippings and secured the form back into place, I then poured a concrete windowsill making sure it had a slope of about 15deg for rainwater run off. I used a hammer to try and raise as many bubbles out of the mix, I also used a trowel to give the surface a nice smooth finish. After a couple of hours I removed the edge of the form and wiped the surface of the windowsill over with a damp sponge, unfortunately as I pulled the form rather than sliding it there was a slight rough finish to the sill, but it should not affect its strength and won't notice once it is painted. After giving the windowsill a week to cure I was able to give it a coat of paint, I also refitted the plastic trim on the window and replaced the damaged silicone with frame sealant. The repair went well and if I had been a bit more organised I could have finished it (except the painting) in one day, it is good to finally have this job ticked off my list.
