Eastern Barents Sea, unnamed islet, 1965–1970. Yegor Sviridov, a sailor on a fishing seiner, is thrown overboard during an autumn storm; the vessel is lost, and he washes up on a bare, rocky island. He is saved by the remains of an old fishing station with a barrel and a rusty stove, and by his ability to catch birds, eggs, and fish. Five years pass: the ships sail far, and no one sees the smoke from his fires. In the spring of 1970, a storm tears the turf off the slope, and Yegor sees a steel hatch framed in concrete. Below is a mothballed observation post: shelves, instruments under covers, emergency supplies, and a hand-cranked transmitter. Yegor cranks the dynamo and sends a signal. A day later, a border guard rescues him.
