Subpolar Urals, a remote ravine between nameless streams, September 1979. Mansi hunter Timofey Pakin goes to a place the elders used to say briefly: "Don't go there, there's no game there." Upon entering, he immediately senses something amiss: the silence is dead—not a bird, not a trace. And the compass won't stop: the needle wobbles and trembles. This happens over an ore body, but he's never encountered such a powerful anomaly. Beneath a mossy mound, Timofey finds a concrete cap and a steel hatch with a ring, and when he puts his ear to it, he hears a steady, low hum from underground. He doesn't open it, but marks the spot with a notch and reports it to the district.
