To get from Motomachi to Yamate, you have to climb a steep hill. This hill is filled with history from the Meiji period onwards. In Omarudani, near Ishikawacho Station, there was a large charcoal grill on a par with Honmoku Kominato. Near Motomachi Street is Dokatazaka, where Shimoda Tenement House was once home to workers from Shimoda who built the Horikawa Canal that flows in front of Motomachi. A young couple, Tsurumatsu and Okichi, who settled there, later lived an unhappy life as "Chinese Okichi." Their story was even made into a Hollywood movie, starring John Wayne.
