The mass is festively scored like a Missa solemnis with brass and timpani in addition to four solists, strings and organ. The chorus dominates, especially in the Gloria and the Credo. This mass is often called "Spatzenmesse" or "Sparrow Mass" because of the violin figures in the Sanctus and Benedictus, which is thought to resemble the graceful sound of a sparrow chirping.
