‘I think I’ve always felt like a sculptor trapped in a painter’s body.’ In this video, London-based artist Daniel Crews-Chubb discusses his work and approach to the body, both as a recurring subject and as a ‘conduit for mark-making’, as well as being taught to mix paint by Peter Doig when he was a student at Turps Art School and why he eschews brushes in favour of staple guns and his sneakers when painting. Crews-Chubb is showing new work with Timothy Taylor Gallery at this year’s Frieze London, including a recent expansion of his painting practice into sculpture. At his South Bermondsey studio, he reflects on the often solitary nature of the artist’s life and why gallery exhibitions and fairs like Frieze are so important.
