John Christian's Studio Sessions: Chapter 2 | Layering Part II.
Welcome to the 2nd chapter of John Christian's Studio Sessions. The first subject that John has approached is 'Layering' and he structures this matter within the first 3 chapters of this serie. On 'Layering part II' John shows us his own way of creating an organic feeling in his sounds by using samples of real instruments. With this technique you can go beyond just using synthesizer sounds and if you deal with this the right way, this really can be a way to create something unique. Both the frequency spectrum and the dynamic range of a real instrument are completely different from a synthesizer sound. Therefor it is necessary to treat the organic sound(s) on the right way to make it blend with the rest, while it is playing still an important role in the overall sound design. In this chapter and also partly in the forthcoming chapter (layering part III) you will see how John handles this subject, using his own tricks. The basics of the layering principal are to combine two or more sounds from different sources to achieve a recognizable signature sound. Layering adds width, depth and overall thickness to your sound and allows very detailed tonal sculpting. Layering is comparable to an orchestra combining multiple instrumentalists in a proper arrangement to create more depth and power to achieve a more complex and interesting outcome. Sensible layering techniques will give you full control over the role that every single layer may play, the clearness of the actual melody and frequency mishaps such as cancellation and clashing. John Christian goes through Layering techniques within chapter #1, #2 and #3.
