Dumpster diving and the alternatives: German supermarkets throw away tons of good food every day. Anyone who takes it out of the dumpster is committing a crime. Quarks is on a dumpster diving expedition with "dumpster divers." Lea and her friends dumpster dive frequently and routinely and kindly take us behind the supermarkets, where there's endless amounts of good food in the bins. On the other hand: What would the world look like if we stopped throwing away food? And what alternatives do we already have? In Mülheim, near the Swiss border, owner Dieter Hieber gives away good food in one of his supermarkets instead of throwing it in the trash, as is common practice in the industry.
