@35 - Spring Garden mania, changing garden layout, making planters, permaculture, forest garden

It's the end of March and we've finally started the planned work on our garden. The new garden design has been half approved (by us) and so we've quite improvised along the way.... but I guess, that's how it always is with any plans :P We wanted to created sort of permaculture garden, a wild garden with natural planters, little unusual and arty. A garden where we can mix all our veggies and flowers...medicinal herbs and trees and anything we actually get our hands on. A garden where we can experiment. It may look a bit empty at start but we will fill every space we can find. Our first 3 planters are made from half fallen trees (actually hanging in the air) in our forest. We've cut them down, dragged them to our garden, debarked them, split them half and then we cut their corners so they fit together like a puzzle :) They are pretty heavy and sitting well on the ground and I think they look really nice and chunky. We've dug the soil in each planter about 30 cm deep, placed a cupboard box at the bottom to suppress any weeds and roots, watered the box down, placed a wood sticks over for an extra aeration, then added a layer of our compost and sifted top soil. We sifted all the top soil (It felt like 100 years of soil sifting!) as we thought we might get rid of the weeds, but it did not work... nevertheless it looks pretty :) The work was quite long and manually heavy, but we had a lots of fun and managed it all in just two people, wine was required at evenings to relax the muscles! :) Life is good when you create!
