#1 Rebuilding the Stone Corner & Clearing the Winter Room
Rebuilding the Stone Corner & Clearing the Winter Room | Italian Baita The journey begins. In this first chapter, we finally lay hands on our centuries-old, abandoned stone cabin (baita) in the Italian Alps to save it from collapsing. With no voiceovers or music—just the raw, satisfying sounds of tools against stone, earth, and wood—we tackle the most critical structural repairs to secure the cabin's future. 🌿 In this episode: Securing the foundation: Digging the side drainage trench to protect the stone walls from mountain moisture. Structural rescue: Rebuilding the collapsed rear corner of the house, stone by stone, using traditional masonry techniques. Clearing the perimeter: Moving and sorting the massive stones scattered around the sides of the cabin. Reclaiming the interior: Removing the old animal feeding troughs and deep-cleaning the historic winter room. Replacing history: Carefully removing the rotted, ancient window lintel and hand-fitting a sturdy new one in its place. Join us and our dog, Pandora, as we take the very first steps in transforming this mountain ruin into a living home.
