This song was inspired by a warm-up game I used to play in theatre class called “Countdown.” In this game, you start by shaking one hand ten times, then you repeat with your other hand, and then do the same with each foot. Then you shake 9 times, then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and finally once on each hand and foot. It gets sillier as the numbers get smaller and you can feel the movements getting closer together. It’s a great game for older elementary kids and up, so I wanted to make a version that littles could do too! There are many different ways to use this activity, but my favorite is to have them hold an egg shaker, like I do in the video. They can choose which hand feels most comfortable to hold the egg shaker in. This is probably their dominant hand, but they may still be deciding, or may be ambidextrous. 6 - 18 months: Simply grasping an egg shaker and shaking is a big task for a very young child, so if that’s all they want to do, that’s fine! Have a blast! Grasping develops fine motor skills by strengthening their tiny hand muscles, which will help them draw and write before you know it. 18 - 36 months: Toddlers can begin to shake to the rhythm and accentuate the numbers - and even count along! 3 + years: Here’s where the activity gets really fun. You can incorporate a cross lateral movement, which strengthens the midline of the brain to help both sides work together. Here's how it works: Check out the 0:30 second mark in this video. When the counting starts, have the child move their shaker ACROSS the midline of their body to their non-dominant side (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) Then have them move the shaker back to their dominant side (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) Move it across the body again to the non-dominant side (1,2,3,4) Then back to dominant (1,2,3,4) Across to non-dominant (1,2) Back to dominant (1,2) And then back and forth really fast for the 1,1,1,1,1! You can also explain this by asking them to imagine their arm is a door and they are shutting it then opening it. Fingerplay variation: Look at the 1:08 mark in this video to see a fingerplay variation. This is great for visual and kinesthetic learners. Clapping variation: If you don’t have a shaker, you can clap instead of shake! This activity promotes many learning objectives for littles, including gross and fine motor skills, listening skills, following instructions, rhythm, coordination, cross lateral movement, counting, and it introduces the idea of how numbers break down into halves! Most importantly, it is a fun activity they will likely want to try again and again until they master it.
