Afghanistan: The Wakhan Corridor "Deadliest Roads"
Lying in the far northeast of Afghanistan, the Wakhan Corridor is bordered by the peaks of the Hindu Kush and reaches a height of nearly five thousand meters. This forgotten region of Afghanistan is the only one to have been spared by the war that has ravaged the country for years. No American or Taliban soldier has penetrated here. Its inhabitants live as they did in the Middle Ages, without running water or electricity, and they survive mainly from bartering. The single road that crosses the corridor is of difficult access, carved out of the mountainside and often buried under several meters of snow.A few rare adventurers at the wheel of ancient Russian trucks take the risk a few times a year in order to provision the isolated corridor and exchange essential supplies for sheep and yaks.
