D. L. Moody was born in Northfield, Massachusetts, to a family of bricklayers. His father died when Dwight was 4, leaving nine children. His mother never encouraged Dwight to read the Bible, and he only acquired the equivalent of a fifth-grade education. At 17, Dwight moved to Boston. After searching the city for weeks, he landed a job selling shoes in his uncle's store. However, to keep young Moody away from bad influences, employment was conditional on his church attendance. While in Boston, Moody attended the Mount Vernon Congregational Church to hear the famous Edward Norris Kirk (1802–1874) preach. His Sunday school teacher at Mount Vernon, Edward Kimball, began to take an interest in young Moody's spiritual life, so on April 21, 1855, Kimball felt it was time to ask Moody to commit to Christ. So, he headed to the shoe store and ran inside while Moody was wrapping and putting away shoes. The young man was ready to hear about the gospel. That day, D. L. Moody became a Christian. Moody's desire was to reach the city's lost youth: children with little or no education, from unfavorable family situations, and difficult economic circumstances. Soon the Sunday School outgrew the hall used as a meeting room. As the classes grew, associates encouraged Moody to start his own church. Finally, on February 28, 1864, the Illinois Street Church opened in its own building with Moody as pastor. In 1873, he headed to England. His evangelistic meetings took the British Isles by storm. Moody's visit made a lasting impression and inspired laypeople throughout the region to start children's ministries and ministerial training schools for women. After two years in England, Scotland, and Ireland, he returned to the United States as a celebrity. He was invited to preach in many American cities. He preached a simple gospel, free from denominational divisions, which broadened his influence and support.
