Raised by his mother, he began attending a neighborhood Baptist church. He was a faithful churchgoer, and one day at the age of 17, he was called to preach. Dr. Jack Hyles began preaching at the age of 17 and pastored for over half a century. When he died on February 6, 2001, the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, had a membership of over 100,000, with a peak year of over 18,000 public professions of faith and over 15,000 baptisms. For many years, the church was known for having “The Largest Sunday School in the World.” During Dr. Hyles’s ministry, the property value of the First Baptist Church increased by over $70,000,000. On a typical week, Dr. Hyles counseled over 150 members. He administered two Christian elementary schools, one Christian middle school, two Christian preparatory schools, and the largest Fundamental Baptist Bible College, alongside his regular pastoral duties and sermon preparation, while also dedicating two days each week to preaching at churches and conferences both nationally and internationally. Dr. Hyles left his mark on Christianity, and his legend lives on through the books he wrote, the sermons he preached, and the lives he transformed. He authored 49 books and pamphlets, selling over 10 million copies. He preached more than 60,000 sermons, many of which were recorded. Dr. Hyles's experience spanned 41 years of pastoring First Baptist Church and preaching at numerous evangelistic campaigns, Bible conferences, and other events. He preached in every state of the Union and in many foreign countries. The annual Pastors' School, started by Dr. Hyles, brought thousands of preachers from every state and many foreign countries. Dr. Hyles accomplished all that he did because he spent more than 20 hours a week praying and studying the Word of God. He was a firm believer in submitting the Christian life and the need for the Holy Spirit to accomplish many good things for God.
