Krakar Pass - Why Is Nobody Talking About This Place? - EP:02
On 6 May 2026, my journey began from Attock where I had arrived the previous evening. Early in the morning, I had breakfast at a local hotel in Attock and then headed towards Haji Shah Mor. Before continuing the ride, I refueled the bike, and this time 1800 PKR was enough to fill the tank completely. From Haji Shah Mor, I joined the GT Road towards Peshawar. After crossing Attock Khurd, the mighty Indus River divides Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and this is where I officially entered KPK. From Jahangira, I took a U-turn towards Swabi Road and continued riding until Chota Lahore. From there, I turned left towards the inner areas of Swabi, Mardan, and eventually entered Buner District. Buner, which remained part of Swat until 1991, is now a separate district with Daggar as its main city. Interestingly, there is no actual city named “Buner,” just like Swat and Hunza also don’t have cities with the same names. From here, I finally turned onto the road I had come to explore — the legendary Krakar Pass, once known as Malandri Pass. A place where, nearly 500 years ago, the famous Battle of Malandri Pass took place. During that era, the mighty Mughal Empire was so confident in its power that it attempted to establish control over these mountainous tribal regions. The local Yousafzai tribes were led by the warrior chief Kalo Khan. In 1586, Emperor Akbar sent an army of 40,000 soldiers under the command of Birbal while personally monitoring the campaign from Attock Fort. The battle continued for almost a year, ending in a devastating defeat for the Mughals, with more than 10,000 Mughal soldiers losing their lives in these mountains. Today, the name Malandri Pass has been changed to Krakar Pass, but history never forgets its stories. Krakar Pass stands at an elevation of 4084 feet and connects Buner with Swat. One of the most famous points here is Asmani Mor, where the largest waterfall of Buner can be seen. Due to its connection with Elum Mountain, it is also known as Elum Waterfall, Krakar Waterfall, or Asmani Mor Waterfall. In 2022, the Krakar Tunnel project was approved, and construction is currently underway. Once completed, this nearly 3-kilometer-long tunnel will reduce the travel time between Buner and Swat from almost 3 hours to just 40–45 minutes. I spent some time at the top of the pass in front of the beautiful waterfall, where local boys invited me for food and warmly insisted that I sit and eat with them. After crossing the pass, I traveled through Barikot to Mingora, where I spent an hour shopping for my next camping adventure. Later, passing through Khwazakhela, I finally reached Madyan, where I stayed for the night. #KrakarPass #ElumMountain #Buner #Swat #Pakistan #TravelWithNabeel Subscribe to Travel with Nabeel to explore more hidden gems across Pakistan.
