As I used Simthread metallic thread albeit briefly in this stitch along I will show how to: Jury rig a thread stand using a plastic beaker, three elastic bands and a pencil so that the thread unwinds nice and straight. What needle to use. The settings to change on your machine to stop thread from shedding to get virtually pain free stitching with metallics (I say virtually because some of it depends on some brands of thread being more challenging).
