1948 Supro Valco Bantam TINY TUBE AMP Restoration & DEMO
Valco made a few small amplifiers during and after the war years. This model, an early Bantam - with its 510-8 circuit - is probably among the smallest and simplest they made. I'm not sure about the model name of this amp as I do not have catalogs from this period and have only ever seen one other example of this model, but I do know they made one version called the "Bantam", which had no controls on it at all! This one sports a black and white faux leather covering and a whopping 6" speaker - perfect for stadium gigs. Tubes are 6V6, 5Y3, and 6SL7. It's 5-watt single-ended power output is similar to other small amps of the day, including the Fender Champion (Champ) 600, which came out the same year this one was made. When I got this one, it hadn't been well looked after. Although the circuit was, for the most part, untouched, the speaker was missing and the cab condition left something to be desired. Here, we will take a look at the schematic and try to restore this as sympathetically as possible to its original condition while making it, once again, a useful, reliable, great-sounding recording amp. Here's a 1948 Supro Catalog showing this Bantam: http://www.vintaxe.com/catalogs_pages...
