A Lancaster Bomber Pilot’s Cap That Survived 31 Missions | Season 5 Episode 55 | The Repair Shop
📺 Subscribe 👉 https://bit.ly/TheRepairShopTV Today in the Repair Shop, Jay Blades and the team restore three extraordinary pieces of history, each carrying powerful wartime stories and family memories. First into the barn is Tony from Sussex with her late father’s RAF pilot cap. Worn by Flight Lieutenant Owen Scott during 31 Lancaster bomber missions in the Second World War, the hat accompanied him through some of the most dangerous raids of the conflict. Hat restorer Ian Harding carefully rebuilds the cap’s structure, crafts a new peak, and sympathetically ages it — preserving its character so it can be passed on to Owen’s grandson, Sam. Next, Alan brings a leather armchair with a remarkable story of survival. Hidden from Nazi soldiers in occupied France and later damaged in an Allied air raid, the chair is a rare symbol of courage and family resilience. Upholsterer Hannah Weston Smith and leather expert Suzie Fletcher work together to stabilise the torn leather, rebuild the seat, and make the chair safe and comfortable again — while keeping its wartime scars intact. Finally, headteacher Jill Davies arrives with a historic painted school sign dating back to 1838. Blacked out during the Second World War to protect village information, the sign holds generations of community history. Art conservator Luchia Scalizi carefully cleans and conserves the surface, revealing original lettering while preserving the wartime markings, ready for display at the heart of the school once more. Three restorations. Three stories of survival, memory, and craftsmanship — brought back to life in the Repair Shop.
