Today, we’re exploring another of the Ampney villages — and this time, the largest of the three: Ampney Crucis. This village is truly extraordinary. From its picture-perfect traditional village green and classic cricket pitch, to the stunning honey-coloured Cotswold stone houses, every corner feels like a postcard. There’s a beautiful 12th-century church, a gentle river flowing nearby, and of course, a traditional English village pub — everything you imagine when you think of the perfect Cotswolds setting. The name Ampney Crucis comes from Latin, meaning “Ampney of the Cross,” inspired by both the local brook and the historic cross found in the churchyard of the parish church, the Church of the Holy Rood. In the churchyard stands a remarkable 15th-century stone cross, set atop a slender column. What makes this cross especially fascinating is how well-preserved it is. During the religious upheaval of the 17th century, the head of the cross was hidden inside the church, tucked away behind the rood loft stairs to protect it from destruction. It remained concealed for centuries before being rediscovered and carefully restored during the Victorian era. Despite being just three miles from Cirencester — often called the capital of the Cotswolds — Ampney Crucis feels worlds away from the busy tourist trail. Like its neighbouring villages, Ampney St Mary and Ampney St Peter, it remains peaceful, unspoiled, and wonderfully quiet. On a beautiful sunny day like today, it’s easy to see why this village feels so special. It’s calm, relaxing, and full of timeless charm.
