Why would Jesus sit down at a table with people everyone else avoided? In Mark 2:13–22, Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him. Then Levi throws a dinner party—and the guest list shocks the religious leaders. Tax collectors. Outsiders. People labeled “sinners.” The Pharisees ask: Why does He eat with them? Jesus answers with one of the most powerful statements of His mission: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” In this Bible study, we also reflect on a powerful story told by Tony Campolo about a birthday party thrown for a woman named Agnes—a prostitute who had never had a birthday celebration in her life.
