Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira stated on Thursday, the 16th, that the United States imposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian products because the country did not bow to the demands of US President Donald Trump. According to Vieira, during negotiations, the White House demanded Brazil's "capitulation." "What bothers the United States government is the fact that Brazil did not bow to the excessive demands and unreasonable claims presented during the negotiations," Vieira told reporters at the Itamaraty Palace. "I cite as an example demands for the total, unrestricted, and exclusive opening of entire sectors of the Brazilian economy to the United States, without any counterpart for Brazilian products. In other words, they demanded capitulation." Vieira also stated that, since March 2025, the Brazilian government has had more than 30 meetings, in person, virtually, or by telephone, with representatives of the White House. Only with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Trade Representative Jamierson Greer were 11 contacts made.
