Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this historic kovil is believed to have existed for over a thousand years and is recognized as one of the five ancient “Pancha Ishwarams” in the region. The kovil is deeply connected with the Indian epic Ramayana, where it is believed that Lord Rama prayed to Shiva at this sacred site after defeating King Ravana. Over the centuries, Munneswaram has been a major center of worship, attracting thousands of devotees from across the country. The kovil complex consists of several shrines dedicated to different deities, including Shiva, Ganesha, Kali, and Ayyanayake, reflecting a unique blend of Hindu and local spiritual traditions.
