Here, Durga, in the form of Simantini Devi, is worshiped in a small temple. The story surrounding Durga is that one day Lord Shiva attained Gaura-prema and began dancing in ecstasy. His consort, Parvati Devi, also desired to receive the Lord's love, His darshan, and in this state of thirst, she began chanting Gauranga's name, worshiping Him, here in Navadvipa on the island of Simanta Dvipa. Lord Gauranga appeared before her and gave her dust from His lotus feet, which Parvati Devi applied to the parting of her hair (simanta). Thus, Gaura-prema was showered upon Parvati. Lord Chaitanya accepted her as His consort, His beloved energy, His devotee. In the holy dhama, Parvati, Mahamaya tests the sincerity of devotees; her service consists of preventing ignorant living beings who do not wish to be with God from seeing Him. Gaudiya Vaishnavism and its philosophy explain that by meditating on this lila associated with Durga, we can attain the mercy of Lord Chaitanya. Also, here in Simanta Dvipa is a beautiful temple of Jagannatha. The wondrous Deities in this temple are Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra, who are served with great love and worshiped according to high standards. Lord Jagannatha of Simanta Dvipa is nondifferent from the Lord of Sri Nilacala Dhama (Jagannatha Puri). The story of the Lord's appearance in such an extraordinary form is such that King Indradyumna became greatly yearning to meet the Lord. He learned of the divine form of the Lord named Nila Madhava and ardently desired to find this wondrous Deity. But when the king arrived at the place where the Deity was being worshiped, it had disappeared. The king was greatly distressed, but the Lord calmed him and appeared to him in the form of a tree fished from the ocean. Therefore, Lord Jagannath is also known as Daru Brahman—the wooden God. The king summoned the finest sculptors to create a Jagannath Deity from wood, but no one could even touch Him. At one point, an artist arrived—according to some accounts, the Lord himself, while others said it was Vishwakarma (the architect of the demigods)—and offered his service, promising the king that the Deities would be completed, but on the condition that he work behind closed doors and that no one would enter. The king agreed, but due to anxiety, he could not bear it any longer and at some point opened the doors. The sculptor was absent, and Daru Brahman took the form of three Deities—Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra—whose arms and legs were unfinished. The forms of Jagannath were incomplete. The king was greatly upset, but Narada Muni, who came to him at that moment, explained the meaning of Jagannatha's form.
