Continuing our pilgrimage through Sri Navadvipa Dhama, we arrived at a transcendental place where the great devotee of the Lord, Srila Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj, performed his pastimes. His bhajan kutir, where he chanted the holy names, is located here. It is also here that Jagannath das Babaji performed his lila of disappearance. This is the site of his complete samadhi, where his transcendental body still resides. Vraja Mandala was the site of Jagannath das Babaji's bhajan for many years. He was known locally as a siddha baba—a soul fully realized in his nature. The guru-parampara we worship every day is also represented by this great Vaishnava. Jagannath Babaji is the same saint to whom Bhaktivinoda Thakura transferred all his merits after the opening of the sacred birthplace of Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu. For five years, Bhaktivinoda Thakura worked to bring his spiritual master to the Yogapith in Mayapur. On the twentieth day of the month of Phalgun, he brought Jagannath dasa Babaji there, who, according to various estimates, was between 120 and 150 years old at the time. Upon arrival, Sri Jagannath jumped out of his basket and began shouting, "My Nimai was born here!" He danced for a long time under the Kadamba tree and then pointed out the exact spot where Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu had appeared, saying that a temple to Mahaprabhu's parents, Jagannath Mishra and Sachi Mata, should be built there, and next to it, a temple to Mahaprabhu himself, Lakshmipriya and Vishnupriya. Another location approved by Jagannath dasa Babaji was Srivasangam. He indicated the precise location of Srivasa Thakur's house, where the Muslim ruler Kazi had broken the mridanga, and where the Pancha Tattva deities should be installed. Gaudiya Vaishnavas have bestowed upon Jagannatha das Babaji the title "leader of all Vaishnavas." This is his position. Jagannatha das Babaji's mission was to bridge an entire epoch of nearly one hundred and fifty years with his presence on the planet and uphold the purity of Mahaprabhu's tradition. Babaji's transcendental role was to ensure the presence of living revelation. Jagannatha das Babaji is the personification of Krishna Consciousness on earth, the clearest example of a taste for pure bhakti for people who desire to come closer to God. The spiritual devotion and purity exhibited by true babajis inspire devotees and give them strength in their spiritual life. We cannot imitate this. The essence is to remain at our level, maintain our inspiration, and move forward, passing through the stages we need to go through. But the strength with which we pass through these stages comes to us from personalities like Srila Jagannath das Babaji Maharaj. Another characteristic of a true babaji is renunciation, or vairagya. A paramahamsa does not live by any karmic scenarios. His entire body and stream of consciousness are subordinated to the highest spiritual taste that resides in his heart. Maha Bhagavata is the highest example of renunciation, an example of extreme passion for Krishna consciousness. Jagannath das Babaji was completely immersed in chanting in the states of separation and union with Krishna. Another quality of Jagannath das Babaji was extreme humility. He had attained spiritual perfection, and in his heart there was no trace of criticism, arrogance, haughtiness, or disdain for anyone. He treated everyone with the utmost respect. Because the most important feeling he experienced was happiness.
