As human-induced heat engulfs the Earth, nature's timeline begins to shift. The Earth is already sending us alarming signals. We must now heed nature's warnings. Those Standing on the Map of Collapsing Seasons Ask "When Seasons Disappear, What Will Be Left for You?" ■ Unwelcome Tuna Harvest Gugye Port, Yeongdeok The fishing nets of father and son Son Jae-eon and Son Sang-hyeon are entangled in a tuna so large it's tearing the net. Each tuna can fetch anywhere from millions to tens of millions of won. While seemingly a bumper crop, the tuna caught exceeds the domestic quota, a mere tenth of Japan's, and is thrown back into the ocean. "This is the first time we've seen such large tuna this year. It's a loss, one way or another. Since we're not meeting the quota, we have no choice but to throw it all away." Fishers who have experienced a "plenty, but not a bumper crop" are experiencing changes in the ocean and facing an unpredictable future. The sea routes, the ocean maps that have long been traversed by currents, are becoming increasingly unstable. ■ A Cruel Spring Ma Yong-un, who has been growing apples in Hamyang, South Gyeongsang Province, for 30 years, is experiencing increasingly unusual seasons. Early spring flowers are freezing from cold damage, and apples are being burned by the heatwave. With Chuseok just around the corner, the red-tinged Hongro apples aren't ripening, causing anxiety. "What I fear most is that the winters will become so warm that one day, I won't be able to farm." My older brother, Ma Yong-ha, moved to Yanggu, Gangwon Province, in search of the best location for apple farming. "Twenty years ago, there was already talk of the climate changing. So I wanted to go as far north as possible. Now, I'm stuck at the Military Demarcation Line, blocking my path." In 50 years, apples will only be grown in Gangwon Province, and by 2090, apples may disappear from South Korea. ■ Born Haenyeo, Witness to the Jeju Sea Jeju Haenyeo Go Myeong-hyo, a haenyeo diver in Iho-dong, Jeju, records the changing seas with an underwater camera. The sea she records has already changed. The kelp and sea cucumber that once formed the deep green forests have long since disappeared, and the abalone and conch that once graced the haenyeo's fingertips are in short supply. "This is the sea that the haenyeo, the divers who dive most frequently, have protected for generations. I can see the conches disappearing more and more. It feels truly desolate." As a coral explorer for the Marine Citizen Science Center "Paran," she witnesses corals melting and turning white due to high water temperatures in the waters off Jeju Island, the last refuge for Pacific corals. "It feels like the corals are constantly talking. They say, 'This is the sea, this is the sea.'" Having dived for generations, she has now become a witness to the sea. As she documents her mother's sea transformation, she may well become the "last haenyeo" of this sea. ■ Warnings from the Sea Beyond Borders As the Kuroshio Current meanders and shifts its course, tuna catches plummeted at Katsuura Port in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The Kotzebue region in Alaska experienced record low catches, with more rain than snow, floods, typhoons, and rising water temperatures hindering salmon returns. Arctic sea ice is melting faster, and new marine life is migrating northward. The Pacific Ocean, the East Sea, Jeju Island, and Alaska are connected by sea. "The Arctic Ocean may become a new habitat for marine life worldwide." Dr. Yang Eun-jin of the Korea Polar Research Institute, who embarked on an Arctic expedition aboard South Korea's only icebreaker, the Araon, continues her journey last year by discovering squid in the Arctic high seas. She is tracking the movements of Arctic marine life, including Arctic cod, zooplankton, and barnacle larvae, which live on sea ice, and observing sea ice. Recording a Disappearing Season!
