Initially, it exhibits no sexual dimorphism and only reaches sexual maturity at 3 years of age. Adults measure 70 to 120 centimeters in length and weigh up to 35 kg; they are gray to black in color; their pectoral fins are small and black, like the rest of their fins. They feed mainly on planktonic microcrustaceans, fruits, algae, and larvae. Tilapia is the generic name for a group of fish of African origin, consisting of several species, some of which are economically valuable, belonging to the genus Oreochromis. Commercially valuable species are raised in professional fish farms around the world. They mostly live in tropical regions, where conditions are favorable for their reproduction and growth.
