Here’s how the Chevy Vega was a recall-plagued nightmare for GM
In this episode I provide the history of the Chevrolet Vega, GM's attempt to introduce a new subcompact that would have far less less problems than the rear-engined Corvair. With an all-new 4-cylinder with an engine block cast entirely out of aluminum, GM execs expected it to be ready in 2 years after the concept started in 1968. All the car magazines hailed it as revolutionary, and Motor Trend awarded it car of the year for 1971. But in less than two years, all the shortcuts done to get the car to market began to show, resulting in several recalls, for engine failures due to loss of coolant and oil, premature rust, and the throttle being stuck open at high speeds. By 1975, GM had to offer a new warranty that would replace the engine, but by then the damage was done. Although over 2 million Vegas were sold, very few are still on the road today.
