Turning Scrap Steel Into $200+ of Lathe Tools

Stop overpaying for factory toolholders when you have the tools to make them yourself! In this video, we are turning 20 dollars of scrap 1018 steel into two completely custom, rock-solid toolholders for an Aloris Quick change CA tool post. Buying name-brand tooling adds up incredibly fast, but if you have a mill, a lathe, and a little patience, you can engineer out the flex, to optimize and tailor your tools perfectly to your workflow. We break down the entire machining process step-by-step, including: Roughing out the bulk material with a standard endmill to save your expensive cutters. The critical math behind 60-degree dovetail cutters (and how to avoid melting your tools). Cheap 1018 steel vs. pre-hardened 4140. Sourcing locking hardware straight from the workshop "junk drawer." Finishing up with a quick cold-blue coat for that clean, factory look. Stop adapting your projects to fit your tools—start adapting your tools to fit your imagination. If you enjoyed the build or have tips on how to improve the process, drop a comment below! I’m learning as I go on this journey to build cool stuff, and your feedback keeps the shop moving forward.
