Unboxing a Practically Brand New IBM PC XT Setup with Amber Monitor... Hard Drive Still Boots!

I recently found a great deal on this complete, practically brand new IBM PC XT office setup from the mid-1980s. The Amber Monochrome monitor especially caught my eye since it matches my beloved IBM 5155 Portable PC. This IBM 5160 PC XT came with the original IBM keyboard, an Amdek 310A Amber Monochrome monitor, a Toshiba P1340 dot matrix printer, original manuals, and software. The condition of this system is incredible, with many of the components appearing to have seen almost no use since the 1980s. The biggest surprise came when I powered it on for the first time. The original MFM hard drive spun up and the system actually booted into its original software environment. Instead of finding an empty DOS prompt, I was greeted with Hard Drive Manager 2, a customized menu system with shortcuts to programs and data from its original life, including Pacioli 2000 accounting software, WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, dBase, and other classic applications. After testing the system and re-seating some chips, I backed up the entire hard drive contents and the system ROMs to preserve this piece of computing history. I then installed a PicoMEM ISA card with my own ELKS Linux image and prepared the system for a side-by-side run with the IBM 5155 Portable PC. Future videos will explore the original software found on this machine, networking it with the 5155 and other systems, using the dot matrix printers, and writing software and drivers for this classic 8088-based computer.
