RETENTION & RELAPSE

RETENTION -Moyers (1973) defined retention as the holding of teeth following orthodontic treatment in the treated position for the period of time necessary for the maintenance of the result. Joondeph and Riedel (1985) explain retention as the holding of teeth in ideal aesthetic and functional positions. Retention is accomplished by a variety of mechanical appliances. RELAPSERobert Moyers states that relapse is the term applied to the loss of any correction achieved by orthodontic treatment. Horowitz and Hixon (1969) defined relapse in general as changes in tooth position after orthodontic treatment. Enlow (1980) defined relapse as a histogenetic and morphogenic response to some anatomical and functional violation of an existing state of anatomic and functional balance.
