Narrative-Based Learning: Engaging Adult Learners with Stories, Scenarios, and Simulations

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿: Speaker: Mike Stein, MA ISD This presentation discusses how narrative-based learning can transform education by making content more engaging, memorable, and applicable through storytelling, scenarios, and simulations. The speaker demonstrates how embedding learning within meaningful narratives helps learners connect emotionally and cognitively to the material, especially in professional and adult education contexts. 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Simple stories (low effort), interactive scenarios (moderate effort), and full simulations (high effort) allow educators to scale their use of narrative based on time, resources, and instructional goals. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀. Reframing lectures, quizzes, or case studies into problem-driven stories or decision-based scenarios can make learning more meaningful without requiring large-scale development or advanced technology.
