In a packed Estadio Azul, Cruz Azul drew 2-2 with Tecos, but thanks to Tigres' loss to Atlante, they managed to secure a spot in the Clausura 2004 playoffs. A hard-fought but hopeful playoff berth! The match began with the visitors dominating. Tecos controlled the midfield and took an early lead with a low shot from Eduardo Lillingston that beat goalkeeper "Conejo" Pérez in the 10th minute. UAG could have extended their lead immediately, but Lillingston himself squandered a one-on-one opportunity. Cruz Azul gradually recovered, spurred on by the Argentinians Delgado and Marcelo Carrusca. Luis Fernando Tena adjusted his tactics and brought on Juan Carlos Cacho before the half-hour mark. "Chelito" came close to equalizing with a chip shot that went just wide. In the second half, Luciano Figueroa came on and changed the course of the game. First, in the 61st minute, he scored the equalizer after a great play by Osorio down the left flank. But just when it seemed Cruz Azul was taking control, Tecos struck again: in the 76th minute, Danilo Turcios received the ball inside the box and fired past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. That's when hope arrived from the stands: the fans began chanting that Atlante was beating Tigres. That encouragement fueled Cruz Azul, who pushed forward with everything they had. And in the 82nd minute, Figueroa appeared again with a lethal header after a cross from Delgado. The 2-2 equalizer that felt like qualification!
