Skunk Anansie is a British band formed in February 1994 and consists of Skin (Deborah Anne Dyer), Cass (Richard Keith Lewis), Ace (Martin Ivor Kent) and Mark Richardson. The first single to be released was Selling Jesus, but its success was limited to the underground scene. Skunk Anansie achieved its first success with the song Little Baby Swastikkka. BBC Radio 1 FM picked up the song and threw it into the high rotation of the playlist; The radio station gave away 2000 copies of the song as prizes. This was followed by the album Paranoid & Sunburnt and the big hit success came. Two other albums followed: Stoosh (1996) and Post orgasmic chill (1999). With the single Hedonism (Just because you feel good) an international hit was scored in 1997, including a top 10 hit in the Netherlands. The three albums sold a total of four million copies worldwide. In 2001, the group came to the decision that they could not continue - mainly because Skin wanted to go her own way - and the group broke up. Skin started a solo career, but could not match the band's success. In 2008, Skunk Anansie reconvened; two years later the fourth album Wonderlustre was released. The album was a reasonable success and was number 1 in Italy. Later the albums Black traffic (2012) and Anarchytecture (2016) followed. Mark Richardson indicated in an interview in November 2008 that the band had plans for a Best of album, as well as new material. On October 9, 2009, the Greatest Hits tour started at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It was the first official tour in nine years. On November 8th and 9th, 2009, Skunk Anansie performed at Paradiso in Amsterdam and on Sunday, May 30th, 2010, at Pinkpop in Landgraaf. In 2011, Skunk Anansie made two songs for the movie Sucker Punch. In 2014, a collaboration with Bastille and Rag'n'Bone Man followed, for the song Remains on Bastille's mixtape VS. The name Skunk Anansie is a combination of Skunk, the English word for 'skunk', a well-known animal that does not release too pleasant air as a defense, and Anansie, a spider known from the storytelling tradition of Africa, Suriname and the Caribbean.
