Renly rolls his shoulders as he chats with Catelyn Stark. He always preferred silks to armor. Far more comfortable. And it didn't chaff. He barely notices the shadow flowing into the tent before a dark apparition wearing his brother's face drives a blade through his armor and chest. Coughing, Renly drops, the shadow drifting away into smoke. From his office within the main tower of Winterfell, Stannis looks down at the message from the Wall. His wife and daughter were dead. Melisandre had sacrificed them in order to try bringing him back after reading a letter saying he'd been beaten by the Bastard of Bolton. Grinding his teeth, Stannis has one of the few horses saddled and rushes out into the storm. For days, he rides through the snow, hellbent on returning to Castle Black. He had to kill Melisandre. When his horse dies, Stannis slogs through the winter hellscape on his own feet. Finally, Stannis collapses on the ground, the cold slowly pulling him into unconsciousness. Both boys wake up in the middle of the night, their respective deaths causing them to gasp and claw at the air. Both make identical vows; this time would be different. Renly and Stannis sit across from each other in Storm's End. Stannis takes the time to savor the meal before him. He had been dreaming about this event for years, and this time he had determined to prepare accordingly. Rather than what had happened during the previous siege, Stannis had used the time between when Robert was coming down from the Vale to bring in every available stockpile of food to the castle. This time he wouldn't starve. The siege had dragged on for a few months at this point. Renly was eating his food with a strange slightly frozen expression on his young face. Stannis: You all right, little brother? You seem preoccupied. Rather than answer, Renly just shakes his head and keeps eating. Stannis narrows his eyes at his brother. Renly had been having nightmares for years, and sometimes he yelled about a shadow killing him or whispered about Loras Tyrell. Stannis had been thinking hard about the situation. He knew he had all his memories from his last life, but could his brother have the same? He had considered simply trying to adjust his life according to what he'd known, exposing the Lannisters, ensuring his claim was secured, but if Renly knew, that could present an opportunity. Tapping his fingers against the table, Stannis considers what to do, then decides to ask a question he'd stewed over in both this life and the previous one to see if his theory was correct. Stannis: Renly, why did you offer me that peach outside of Storm's End? As if he felt a knife driving into him, Renly’s eyes bulge and he almost jumps out of his chair. Satisfied that his ploy had worked, Stannis relaxes and gives his brother a considering look. Stannis: I remember everything about my life too, Renly. I remember the parley, I remember the tourneys, I remember Robert's failures as a king leading to a bloody war that will claim both of our lives. Renly’s child-like demeanor vanishes, and an expression similar to the one he’d often worn at council meetings appears on his young face. Renly: So, you died too. That's funny. How did it happen? Stannis: I… I died in the North, in the middle of a snowstorm. Melisandre, the Red Woman, received a letter falsely claiming I'd died, and she burned my wife and daughter alive to try and revive me. The sacrifice ended up bringing back a bastard named Jon Snow. Never found out why. I think that I'm going to learn from my mistakes, what do you think? Renly: (teasing) So, you're going to let me be king this time? Stannis: Bugger off. Renly: In all seriousness, I look back at my life, and I really dug my own grave, I should have marched on the capital quicker, and I should have just attacked you. But then the shadow with your face killed me. Stannis: Yes, you should have. We fought each other, and we both lost. What if we stand together, united? There's a great deal that we can take advantage of this time. I have the tactical experience, you have the political knowledge. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
