The United Earth Government have lit up the streets at night to keep the Pharigs at bay, and the blanket curfew is upheld by the Night Police. Earth’s space program has long since been abandoned in the face of the war against the alien invader. Kerry Donalson is a newspaperman, and is at a cafe for a secret meeting with someone who claims to have information about a dead rocket scientist he once knew, and whom the informer claims is very much alive. But that is impossible. Isn’t it? An inventive tale of the lengths a government might be willing to go to to keep in power. The original (and rather pretentious, if you ask me) blurbs: Like the great wooden horse of Homeric legend were the Pharigs—an enemy at the gates of a new Ilium’s space-defended towers. To explore the future with a myth-maker’s divining rod may be a highly dangerous undertaking. You may venture far from familiar landmarks and find yourself turning a sickly shade of green. But so sturdily built and tremendous is the “Trojan Horse” which Marion Z. Bradley has envisioned here that the iron clang of his hoofbeats may even now be deceiving the world of tomorrow. The strangest of strange events becomes terrifyingly real and suspense mounts high indeed in this unusual novelette by the author of JACKIE SEES A STAR. This story was extensively researched and transcribed by your humble narrator, and is now available to the world as a free ebook for all to enjoy: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/78807 About the author: Marion Zimmer Bradley (1930-1999) is a pretty big name in Science Fiction and Fantasy, especially known for her acclaimed Fantasy novel series starting with The Mists of Avalon, and her Darkover series. Many years after her death, she was accused of sexual abuse by her daughter, and other serious charges, and she has been widely denounced and cancelled because of this. I believe strongly in separating the art from the artist, especially when the artist is deceased. The story stands (and falls) on its own merits. Reading and enjoying a story by a given author does not in any way entail support of, or agreement with, said author’s extracurricular activities, however reprehensible they might be. This narration was recorded in 2026. - Stories of Futures Past presents a vintage Science Fiction short story, narrated by myself, Tom Trussel. An actual, real living human being, warts and all. Any and all voices and effects are produced live during reading with my actual voice. No obnoxious after effects, synthetic voices or filters used. English is not my first language, inaccurate accents and the occasional strange pronunciation will happen. No mockery is intended. These stories are good for English learners / ESL. The full text is right there on the screen in a big and easy to read font. Read along with me. It's great practice!
