Who was Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky, really? It was mocked, ignored, and dismissed as the imaginary professor of imaginary geometry. Only after the death of Carl Friedrich Gauss, when his private letters revealed the deep respect the king of mathematics secretly harbored for the work of the Kazan professor, did the scientific world begin to reread those pages with different eyes. It was then that the Italian mathematician Eugenio Beltrami demonstrated that Lobachevsky's geometry was not an impossible abstraction, but could be concretely implemented on surfaces of negative curvature. From that moment, Lobachevsky's ideas entered the mainstream of global mathematics, eventually becoming one of the fundamental tools of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.
